The Fleet Coordinator is responsible for ensuring all necessary maintenance is performed on State vehicles.

Preventive or Preventative Maintenance (PM) is work that is scheduled based on calendar time

or runtime (mileage). Technicians perform these maintenance tasks when everything is still

running smoothly in order to prevent future breakdowns or emergency maintenance issues.

PM can be compared to an annual physical check-up. Just like a physical check-up can prevent

illness or disease and lengthen your life, preventive maintenance can prevent vehicle

component failures and extend the functional life of the vehicle.

PM is different from Corrective Maintenance (CM) or Breakdown Maintenance. While PM is

proactive in nature, CM is reactive in nature. CM is a type of maintenance task that is usually

performed after component failure in a vehicle. It’s simply considered as all activities that

restore failed components or broken-down vehicle to its normal working condition.

While sometimes, it is unavoidable, corrective maintenance ends up having a greater financial

impact, as it often implies a long vehicle downtime and can get costly to fix. In addition, a

significant amount of these failures can be avoided if preventive maintenance plans are

followed.

This demonstration explains the difference between preventive/preventative maintenance and maintenance. You can follow along using the PM vs Maintenance slides.
