Geotab Telematics IRIDIUM Satellite*
Modified on: Tue, Dec 29, 2020 at 3:16 PM
If your operation has a vehicle(s) that is often outside of cell coverage, Geotab offers the IRIDIUM Satellite solution.
Additional Key Facts:
- Geotab does not typically sell this product in the USA since we have robust cell coverage
- A GO9 device is installed along with a required modem. Since the modem must have a clear line of sight, placement on the dashboard is highly suggested
- The Satellite solution will Ping once every 30 minutes and typically will only transfer location (GPS) data. Geotab recently added data transfer for events that identify a possible collision and for battery drain; implementation of specific rules is required to capture these events
- The solution comes with an Emergency/Alert button. When the button is pressed, a signal is sent to the GO device, which triggers three processes: 1) The GO device sends a notification to the end-user via the User Interface (UI), 2) A new Ping captures the current GPS, and 3) The GO device will immediately begin beeping. Once the end-user acknowledges receipt of the notification via the UI, the device will stop beeping, confirming to the person in distress that his/her alert has been received
- If the circumstance is reversed and a person outside of cell coverage has not been heard from, the end-user can use the UI to poll the solution forcing a new Ping to capture the current GPS which can then be used to dispatch assistance
- The GO9 device will collect up to 80,000 logs while the vehicle is outside of cell coverage. Once full, the oldest data in the log is overwritten until the vehicle returns to a covered area at which time the device will transfer the collected data
*Note: this solution is not available with our current contract. SFM is working toward an updated contract that will include this solution and hope to have it completed in early 2021.
